background: a number of medicinal plants have been used to treat various immunological diseases. nitric oxide (no) has an important regulatory role in the various types of inflammatory processes. objective: to investigate the no modulatory activity of the extracts of several medicinal plants native to iran including dracocephalum kotschyi, linum persicum, dionysia termeana, salvia mirzayanii, ferulago angulata and euphorbia cheiradenia. methods: the methanolic extracts of the plants were prepared and examined for their effects on the no production by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse macrophages. the level of tnf-α and il-1β proinflammatory cytokines in the macrophage culture were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. results: all the extracts at concentration of 50 μg/ml demonstrated a significant decrease in no production (p

full textL-Glutamin-Induced Inhibition of Endotoxemia by Reducing Pre-Inflammatory Cytokines, Nitric Oxide, and CD40 Expression
Introduction: Researchers have been investigating the major pathogens involved in septic shock caused by lipopolysaccharide in recent years. Moreover, they have been concerned about the use of appropriate drugs to intervene with the main pathogenesis of the disease. This study aimed to investigate the effect of L-Glutamine as an HSP70 inducer in reducing pre-inflammatory cytokines and effective...
full textRegulation of Nitric Oxide Synthesis by Proinflammatory Cytokines
We have examined cytokine regulation of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). 24-h treatment with IFN-'y (200 U/ml) plus TNF (200 U/ml) or IL-1,8 (5 U /ml) increased NOS activity in HUVEC lysates, measured as conversion of I '4CIL-arginine to [ '4Cj L-citrulline. Essentially, all NOS activity in these cells was calcium dependent and membrane associated. ...
full textMelanocortin peptides inhibit production of proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide by activated microglia.
Inflammatory processes contribute to neurodegenerative disease, stroke, encephalitis, and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Activated microglia are a source of cytokines and other inflammatory agents within the CNS and it is therefore important to control glial function in order to preserve neural cells. Melanocortin peptides are pro-opiomelanocortin-derived amino acid sequences tha...
full textNitric Oxide Is a Mediator of Antiproliferative Effects Induced by Proinflammatory Cytokines on Pancreatic Beta Cells
Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in several biological processes. In type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), proinflammatory cytokines activate an inducible isoform of NOS (iNOS) in β cells, thus increasing NO levels and inducing apoptosis. The aim of the current study is to determine the role of NO (1) in the antiproliferative effect of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 β , IFN- γ , and TNF- α on cultured ...
